U.S. Foresees Problems In South America

U.S. foreign policy in Central and South America has been stymied in recent years by a new generation of nationalist leaders who refuse to fully cooperate with Bush administration goals for the region.

And it may not get any better anytime soon.

An op-ed by Jackson Diehl in today's Washington Post sums up the prospects for the coming year:

Morales's victory sets the stage for a year in which leftist populists will be competing for power in elections across the region, including in Peru, Nicaragua and Mexico. All three are among the shrinking cadre of U.S. allies; outgoing Mexican President Vicente Fox uniquely stood up to Chavez during and after Mar del Plata. By the end of this year a Morales imitator could be president of Peru, Daniel Ortega and his Sandinista movement could once again control Nicaragua, and Mexico could be led by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a socialist who has never visited the United States.

There are other scenarios: Center-right candidates could still win in Mexico and Peru, and one might unseat Brazil's leftist president. But that's not what Bush administration officials are anticipating. "This is a wave that has not peaked," one recently told me.

Thanks to Mar del Plata, Bush is at least aware of the problem. On his return he ordered a high-level review of U.S. policy in the region.

It really says something about "our leader" that it is considered newsworthy that the President happened to notice the massive protests in Mar del Plata.

I'm betting that this is spin. Bush doesn't care what Americans think, what makes anyone believe that he gives a damn about the opinions of "furriners."

Diehl's piece goes on to list a variety of cosmetic moves that the U.S. is considering to improve our position with our southern neighbors. CAFTA, blah. An energy initiative, blah. Treasury, blah.

The real problem here is that George W. Bush has discredited U.S. style fascism. Our established corporate controlled governing system can only be spread to other countries when the average man on the street cannot see that it is happening.

Our Latin American neighbors can see the man behind the curtain, and they don't wish to do his bidding.

Thanks for sharing.

Idiots like you are the reason Bush is still in power. He relies on cowards like you to give him political cover when taking away all Americans' rights.

I guarantee you that Homeland Security is familiar with my work.

Same with CIA, FBI, DOD, etc.

I see my referrer logs.

Ho Ho Ho.

Funny how the Bush administration's focus on Iraq and...um...what-not may ultimately cause them to lose the battle for the minds of South and Central Americans. Talk about letting one's backyard fester while trying to spruce up the rest of the neighborhood.

Next thing you know, we'll be attacking countries in our own hemisphere. Great. Just great.

There you said it - plain and simple. That's the low down on chronic loser George's grand fcuk up.

The U.S. emphasis on the "anti-drug" mission in South America has long been recognised as being cover for counter-insurgency activities in behalf of our clients down there.

The U.S. Army is wearing quite thin. Maybe we will use more contractors in LatAm.

Your name precedes mine in the Karmic Account Book of Good Works.

Thanks.

Sometimes the IP resolves to the government agency (those could simply be employees having a laugh at lunchtime).

I get huge numbers of unknown country or blocked referrers. Methinks that's what the spooks do when they are trying to be sneaky.

In hindsight, you are probably correct about Anon.

Calling the USA fascist pales in comparison to some of the things I have slipped in here at one time or another, things that could legitimately get me looked at.

I seem to have hit the nail on the head with that one.

I missed the video, but someone told me GW Bush looked and sounded really fucked up at his appearance at the military hospital.

America's corporate owners must really hate it when their spokesman lets the cameras see him in that condition.

P.S.: Your site is certainly getting spicy. Excellent culinary work.
