The Ground Zero Grassy Knoll

The March 27 issue of New York magazine has an article, The Ground Zero Grassy Knoll, on the current crop of 9-11 conspiracy theories. Aficionados of this genre will find little or nothing new here, but the way the writer, Mark Jacobson, presents his material makes for an interesting read.

Father Frank Morales's conversion was more dramatic. Raised in the Jacob Riis Projects, Morales, who if not for his priest collar could be mistaken for an East Village hipster, is a longtime Lower East Side hero, primarily for his work with local squatter communities. The day after 9/11, the diocese asked if he'd go to ground zero to perform last rites. "They said be prepared, because "we're not talking bodies, Frank, we're talking body parts.""

"I could feel myself getting madder and madder, not the way a priest is supposed to feel," ” says Morales. Sitting with a fireman, Morales called out, "If I had somebody in this mess, I'd wanna get those motherfuckers." It was then, Morales says, that the fireman whispered, "Hey, that'’s not it. You wanna know something? Bush and bin Laden have the same banker."

Later Jacobson describes his own experiences of that day:

Hours later, I sat down beside another, impossibly weary firefighter. Covered with dust, he was drinking a bottle of Poland Spring water. Half his squad was missing. They'd gone into the South Tower and never come out. Then, almost as a non sequitur, the fireman indicated the building in front of us, maybe 400 yards away.

"That building is coming down," he said with a drained casualness.

"Really?" I asked. At 47 stories, it would be a skyscraper in most cities, centerpiece of the horizon. But in New York, it was nothing but a nondescript box with fire coming out of the windows. "When?"

"Tonight . . . Maybe tomorrow morning."

This was around 5:15 p.m. I know because five minutes later, at 5:20, the building, 7 World Trade Center, crumbled.

LIHOP, MIHOP, and assorted other theories are discussed, and deals briefly with the reason why it will be impossible to decipher the truth of the matter--disinformation intentionally placed in the path of the researcher:

The D-word is nothing to take lightly in conspiracy circles. For, as Thomas Pynchon notes in his "Proverbs for Paranoids," if they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers.

Bingo.

There exists many labyrinths and wild goose chases designed to divert anyone who looks seriously at the events of that day.

There are too many grassy knolls this time making for an insurmountable investigative task.

Just the way they want it.

Sometimes the gathering impression of being screwed around and subjected to goose chases is enough - enough to warrant a valid claim that what is being purported is dirty. And dirty is bad enough.

To know how in fact all the underlying parts fit together becomes superfluous. Liken it unto a divorce. Finally one loses interest in the facts and in what one's deceitful partner has really been up to. Years of bullshit and undcertainty in itself become reason enough for drastic seperation. Interest in the bottom line of events dissipates like tears in the sun.

With a legend as garagantuanly leveraged as the official 911 story, there is only one shade with which it can remain plausible- the U.S. gvt was absolutely not involved.

Should collective impressions shift to the contrary and receive the legitimizing powers mainstream media infuses into to the stories and sentiments receiving its attention - well then...all hell will break loose without ever having to get to the bottom of anything. The scent of the excessive tricky dickyness and choppy line of sight from grassy knolls a plenty will in themselves be the undoing of the legend. I think the all or nothing vestmant of the official 911 tale can be its achilles heel.

Hey, look at the UAE ports deal. Anyone ever find out what the fuck that was all about?! It fell apart without any of its grassroot detractors knowing what the hell was behind it. That my friend is pure poetry!

I still think the DP World deal was a red herring. But, like the events of 911, what was the underlying operation? What was the M.O.? What was it a cover for? Originally I felt that it was meant to shore up support for Republicans in Congress, especially those coming up for re-election in the fall. Put the ethics news on the back pages and show these people standing up for national security against the terror-loving Muslims.

Plausible. But was there something deeper at work here?

I think the only bottom line for da' DP-deal was backroom big bucks.

This Admin. doesn't take Homeland Security seriously cause they know the limitations in veracity of their own scare tactics. That's why they have Noooo problembo bringing the UAE into guarding America's sensitive orfices - they can't see a threat that ain't there. Joe Blow doesn't know that. He just knows that a black cloud of evil-doin arab locusts are swarming just beyond his horizon and they're a hungry for his alfalfa fields and resent his big new yellow tractor.

So the deep story here is the story of what backroom deals were originally behind this deal gone somehow sour by the blowback of the Admin's own propaganda de fear.

Or so me kinda thinky.

A better description of the goals of the water-muddiers does not easily come to mind. Everyone can agree that bad stuff happened, but no one has the time or energy to dig back into the unpleasantness. (This is completely separate from the impossiblity of deciphering the disinformation.) Unfocused anger does not lend itself to rigorous investigation, even if the various strands could lead someone to the truth.

The stakes are so big for any yet-unacknowledged perpetrators that no mainstream outlet would even bite on a confession in the case. Unless it was Bush or Cheney (and maybe not even then) doing the confessing, the media stooges would dismiss any revelations as being from a good man who has gone mental.

Re: Dubai Ports.

I think Meatball One's discovery that there was a US/UAE Free Trade Agreement hanging in the balance, potentially allowing majority American ownership of UAE oil projects (currently banned under UAE law), is the real motive behind the whole thing.

When in doubt, always assume financial motivations.

Or as the Watergate meme goes, "follow the money."

You are being way too modest on the Dubai Ports issue.

You solved the fucking thing.

On the Homeland Security angle, you are right that the admin is not as worried about terrorism as is the housewife in Peoria.

I spoke to very savvy person about this, and he has been insisting that there are two (and only two) reasons why we haven't been hit since 9-11.

Neither involve our great intelligence, NSA warrantless eavesdropping, fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here, etc.

They are:

One: The Bush administration was behind the original attacks.

or

Two: Al Qaeda is biding their time and getting everything in place for a really devastating attack.

The logic behind number one I have not been privy to.

The logic behind number two is that the U.S. is filled with soft targets: schools, shopping malls, etc. Al Qaeda, even if severely hamstrung, would have easily been able to do something along those lines.

It sounds like you don't buy the diesel fuel tank in the basement of WTC7 story.

I don't either.

You are right that nobody has heard of WTC7.

Charlie Sheen has either helped the truth movement or severely damaged his career in Hollywood.

Or both.
