Inauguration Day For Morales

This blog's favorite politician (at least in the Western Hemisphere), Evo Morales, will be sworn today as Bolivia's first Indian president.

To many Bolivians, the former coca farmer who will officially be sworn into office Sunday represents the overdue ascension of a long-oppressed indigenous majority. To some South American neighbors, he symbolizes a new, unified generation of leaders emphasizing regional independence from the United States. And in Washington, some view him as a threat to regional stability and a potential roadblock to U.S. interests, including anti-drug programs and efforts to institute a hemispheric trade pact.

Morales will now have to walk a tightrope without a net:

Morales' words have generally been measured and non-inflammatory since the election: On coca eradication, he recently suggested a willingness to accept current production limits pending a study on the market for legal coca, which can be chewed as a stimulant and is used in traditional medicines. He has continued to call for the nationalization of the nation's oil and natural gas reserves, but he soothed concerns of international investors by promising not to seize foreign assets. On trade, he suggested to reporters this week that he doesn't completely rule out the idea of free trade agreement between the United States and the Andean region.

When you start talking about "expropriating the expropriators", that's when things start getting dicey. The royal "we" at Effwit wishes only good things for this brave soul.

He sure is a brave soul. And my prayers are with him too.

Yes, indeed.

It is good to hear from you again.

Best wishes as always.

Hey I read this blog all the time! I don't always have anything to add though...

I didn't know about Morales -- but I'm pleased to find out. It's good of you to publicize this sort of politician so if something does happen to him we can all be suitably suspicious.

Thank you.

It is always nice to know that people out there are keeping up with my version of current events.

Do not hesitate to add your thoughts, or objections if you think I have gone overboard.

About Morales, I always try to pay attention to any leader who arises the ire of Washington.

It usually means they are doing something right.

Good luck with today's election, although it seems that the results will be a blow to progressive people.

Thanks again. I voted for the Green Party. Probably a totally wasted vote in my riding. But still I wanted to make a point. It will probably be a Conservative Gov't -- but it's really not like there is much difference between the Conseratives and Liberals -- just a rearranging of the deck chairs on the Titanic... and a nod to the suggestion of "democracy" --

In any event, I hope its minority gov't.

Good move going for the Greens.

Americans have an aversion toward our "Green" party which, through Nader, was blamed for giving the Presidency to Bush over Gore.

The Canadian Greens, the last I remember, was an European-style Green Party with a platform of environmentalism and other good things.

I am seeing conspiratorial speculation about the suspicious swing over the last couple of months in popular support from the Liberal Party to the Conservatives.

Some folks are saying it just doesn't make sense. Election fraud, a la in the USA, would seem a possibility.

Your point about the Conservatives and Liberals being two sides of the same coin is well taken. It is the same down here.

Take care.
